Francis Cave has spent more than thirty years as a technology consultant and standards specialist in the field of document description and processing. He currently chairs ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 34, the technical sub-committee responsible for international standards in the field. He was an early advocate of SGML and later XML, and in his work with publishers and others he continues to promote and give advice on the use of XML technologies. He was one of the original team at EDItEUR that developed the ONIX standard used for global book supply chain communications. He is co-editor of the most recent edition of the OASIS standard OpenDocument Format for Office Applications (ODF v1.3). He is a regular contributor to the technical work, carried out jointly by SC 34 and Ecma International, to maintain ISO/IEC 29500 Office Open XML File Formats (OOXML).
