Measuring Usage and Making Value Out of AI Services

Back to Schedule

Session Description

Laurel CD

AI tools and software are changing how researchers conduct research, which, in turn, is changing what usage is generated in the research process. Universities, content providers, libraries, and even the AI software providers are trying to grapple with how to understand new types of content engagement. What should be tracked when the provider platform and full text is not the final destination for content usage, but instead it is an AI service? What about when a snippet of a full text or an AI-generated summary of several published pieces is where the researcher stops?

This panel explores how content providers, libraries, and AI services are working together to make AI platform engagement meaningful for multiple stakeholders in the scholarly communications ecosystem. It leans into the COUNTER Code of Practices as a guideline for making usage countable, compatible, and comparable. Participants will discuss the challenges of tracking searches, counting content requests of partial text, and providing useful attribution for providers and librarians.

In the spirit of NISO Plus, after a brief introduction to this topic from each perspective, this panel will engage audience members in lively discussion about how to best measure and evaluate engagement with AI services.
